Monica Popham (b. 1997) is a Gibraltarian artist based in London whose paintings explore the interplay of light across Mediterranean spaces. Working in acrylic, her compositions isolate fleeting moments of sunlight and shadow — the drama and stillness of light moving across everyday architecture, caught at the precise instant before it shifts.

In 2024, Popham won Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year, resulting in a commission for the London Science Museum, where her work now forms part of the permanent collection. Additional works are held in the Soho House Collection and the Gibraltar Government Art Collection.

Popham has exhibited internationally, including A Tale of Two Cities in Tangier (2025), Traces of Humanity across London, Margate, and Gibraltar (2026), and multiple editions of the Gibraltar International Art Exhibition.

Artist Statement

Monica Popham’s work is rooted in the light and architecture of the Mediterranean. She explores sunlight through the way it falls across surfaces and the shadows it creates. Growing up in Gibraltar, she was surrounded by intense light and colour which continue to shape her work.

Her paintings place shadow at the centre of the composition, highlighting different qualities of light, from soft, playful dappled light to the familiar silhouettes of palm trees. Through tightly cropped compositions she isolates fleeting moments of light and shadow, creating a sense of drama and ambiguity within otherwise ordinary spaces.

Throughout her process, Popham remains aware of the temporary nature of shadows and their constant movement, shaped entirely by light.
