Philadelphia, PA — Lion & Lamb Contemporary is pleased to announce The Shape of Things, a group exhibition opening July 3, 2026. The exhibition brings together twelve  contemporary artists working across painting, sculpture, photography, and mixed media to examine form as a site of material and temporal negotiation, where constraint functions not as limitation but as a generative condition.

Curated by Rachael Lambert, The Shape of Things operates around a single proposition: form becomes most legible at the moment before it resolves. Rather than celebrating finished objects, the exhibition investigates the phenomenological and material conditions that make form visible, pressure, interruption, accumulation, constraint. The wire that crosses the sky and suddenly makes the sky legible. The water that holds a body and distorts it. The undergrowth that refuses to simplify.

“Every artist in this exhibition works inside the moment before arrival,” Lambert writes in the exhibition’s curatorial framework. “These artists understand that material agency, the resistance of form itself, becomes visible precisely at the threshold where intention and circumstance collide. What they make is not a record of what things look like. It is a record of what it feels like within transformation.”

The exhibition unfolds across a single expansive floor in a deliberately open configuration. Rather than discrete rooms, moveable wall panels create an organic path through the work, allowing works to exist in dialogue across sightlines. The space rewards both movement and close looking, positioning each artist’s formal investigation without competition while maintaining curatorial coherence.

The exhibition unfolds across three movements, Origin, Presence, and Agency, examining form as it negotiates external forces and the artist’s intervention alike. The primary installation foregrounds works of formal confidence and conceptual clarity. A secondary installation emphasizes experimentation within constraint, treating limitation as a site of material discovery.
